Game Making; Insanity

Welcome to my twisted mind [Twine WNWTW layout]

... And so it goes.

For a while now, I've wanted to make a little post on my game development process. It literally was just because I personally think such things are fun to read about and maybe someone-- even just a future me-- would get a kick out of it. I'd describe my general planning and how I go about things.

One of the beliefs I've held towards myself since early on in 18782 is the following: Do NOT work on more than 1 project at once. Writing down notes is fine, but don't go typing up multiple stories at a time. This was due to prior experience-- I had an issue where I had TOO many ideas and wanted them all to come to fruition... Leading into NONE of them coming into fruition (minus an unreleased game).

Generally, I still think this is good advice. Getting wires crossed really messes you up. However, I've decided to smash that emergency glass of an idea and now the alarms are going off in my head. However, unlike before, I'm like-- "Wow, these alarms actually make for good noise for a future project :)" ... Which is to say, I hear the alarms but I'm ignoring their purpose.

Anyway, this is a long lead up to saying I've been busying myself with 2 projects the last few days-- Kissy Kissy Purr Purr AND working yet again on Who Needs Who The Worst. In a weird turn of events, I kind of think this has increased my productivity on both.

Where I last left WNWTW, it was about 65% complete script wise, maybe closer to 70%. The ideas were all there, but the last 2 character "routes" weren't written out. I think I got burnt out because there was a lot of crosschecking that needed to be done because of how I formatted it; The game is essentially a story told from 6 different POVs, each with at least 1 decision that changes everyone else's routes.

... And this is what I consider to be a "short project".

Anyway, I've found a pingpong rhythm working. I get stuck on KKPP? I work on WNWTW. I get stuck there? I go back to KKPP. Sometimes half a scenario is written, sometimes just a few lines. Both games are technically both in their first draft, so I figure any tonal issues will be fixed on a go-over.

In turn with this, I've also changed how I've been working on WNWTW. I mentioned in a KKPP devlog that I switched from Google Docs to Obsidian. The short of it is 1. I don't want to be connected to the internet to write 2. Better organization and the availability of drop-downs 3. Less Google is a plus. WNWTW wasn't written in Google Docs-- It was Twine. I've switched to kind of a hybrid scenario; Twine to ultimately organize my thoughts, but I've been editing in Obsidian. This also helps because there are a few words that for the life of me, I always misspell, and the Twine application doesn't mark them as misspelled.

Anyway, I do feel as though I'm in rough sailing despite right now enjoying the beautiful sea air. Will I, the captain of this rickety ship I call "solo game development" find treasure or perhaps be lurred into a whirlpool, going mad with scurvy? That's for time to tell!
