April Movie Reviews

One Missed Call

Year: 2003

Rating: 4.0 / 10

I was so excited for this movie. In a way, I almost want to re-watch it so maybe I can find more excitement from it. I love the Takashi Miike movies I've seen-- they're always strange and an experience all their own. However, this one was just... Boring?... I don't even have much to say about it. It's barely memorable.

I preemptively write these reviews so I don't forget things. Even 3 days out, it feels like a very forgettable experience. A further edit, more days out, I barely remember this movie.

Another movie that wasn't so impressive. I mean, it wasn't the worst thing I've ever seen. Visually, it was really nice. I just don't think this movie did anything for me personally. I thought about leaving it out of the review, but since I spent nearly 2 hours with it, I figured I might as well write even two sentences.

I don't know if the main girl's eyebrows were supposed to look like they were shaved off or what, but the obvious dying them to look that way always distracted me... That's not necessarily factoring into my score, but I wanted to mention it lol. It's the main thing I do remember about the film.

Boy, I've had bad movie luck in April! This movie made something as boring as One Missed Call feel more riveting.

Billed as a crime comedy, yeah it's crime, but I can't help but miss what's supposed to be the humor here. It's a poorly written mess, and honestly a disgrace of a movie after finding out it's loosely based on real events, keyword "loosely". The concept of using a real life murder case, especially one that is recent with people who are living and affected AND unsolved to boot just seems so distasteful.

Even trying to ignore the distastefulness -- which is hard to do -- it's just not a good film. It doesn't know if it wants to focus more on the poorly fleshed out romance or the murder case. The police are, shocking, annoying and the love interest is just kind of bland. I expected some deep dark secret from her but no, it was just what everything said on the tin. Boring, boring, boring subplot. The “motive” for murder was incredibly weird and off putting and not something to make light of either, and I dont get why there wasn’t more reprimanding of that...?

The only part that was actually surprising was the deputy being suddenly killed. I'll give it that, I didn't see that part coming. Other than that, it was just so predictable at every turn.

All in all, it was a waste of time. I'm so sorry to the victim's loved ones who this movie dredged up such awful emotions on. They didn't deserve such a thing and the only possible good that can come from this is maybe more people look into the actual crime and bring them closure.
